Wild Earth Wisdom

November 2024 Newsletter

Hello beautiful being and welcome back!  I am so grateful that we are on this journey of self-healing and self-care together.  Speaking of self-care, I would love to offer you some information on one of my favorite self-care practices.  Yoga.  I know, I know, that’s hippie dippy stuff.  But actually, believe it or not it helps.  Through my long journey with endometriosis (see October newsletter for details) I learned on the days that I didn’t complete my yoga practice; I was in more pain than on the days I did. The Corewell Health website states, “Yoga can offer several benefits for people who are experiencing joint-related pain, and yoga is excellent for chronic pain...whether you have hip, back, knee or shoulder pain, yoga can be a great way to help you with pain management.”

I have read dozens of books on endometriosis and most of them tell you, exercise is essential to pain management.  A lot of times, I will start my practice in extreme pain and think, I can’t do this today, I am in too much pain.  But by the time I wind down my practice the pain is lessened or even gone.  The reason I have chosen yoga as my every day practice, instead of say, running or some other cardio is because I base my yoga practice on how I am feeling that day.  If I am feeling really good and high energy then I do a yoga workout.  But let's say I am feeling pain or tired then I will do a gentle or restorative yoga.

You do not have to be a practicing yogi for 20 years to start your practice.  And you need little to no equipment.  When I have been out of town and forgot my yoga mat, I have used a towel.  You do not need expensive blocks, bolsters and straps.  You can use 2 big books, a bathrobe belt and a folded blanket.  There are many types of yoga, so just because you do not like one kind, give another a try.  You may want to start out with gentle yoga, or restorative and work your way up to vinyasa or hatha.  As Erich Shiffmann says, “Yoga is not about touching your toes or standing on your head or folding into a lotus pretzel.  It’s about how you do what you do and how you live your daily life on a moment-to-moment basis.”

You also do not need to use expensive aps.  You can go onto YouTube and google, yoga for beginners.  BAM! Free Yoga practices at your fingertips.  My favorite yoga YouTube channel is Boho Beautiful Yoga.  They are a husband-and-wife team. They both offer videos at all different levels and types of yoga.  They also have a meditation channel too, Boho Beautiful Meditation, which I highly recommend as well.  Both the meditation and the channel.  If you live in the downriver area and would like to attend an in-person yoga class, I recommend Lotus Wholistic Health and Wellness 2855 West Jefferson Ave. Trenton, MI 48183 Phone:  734-799-3533.

Some of my favorite yoga poses include; puppy pose, downward facing dog, child’s pose and tree pose.  Go ahead and google them and maybe give them a try.  Or look up some poses on your own and give them a whirl.  I hope you give it a try today and it helps you with some of your chronic pain, menstrual pain, menopause symptoms, weight loss goals, etc.

Always speak to your doctor before starting a yoga practice and remember to practice safely.  If you have any injuries or illness, then use specified modifications.

Self-care is not selfish
